Former senator Iyabo Obasanjo has thrown her weight behind the use of consensus in selecting political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying the approach is more likely to produce popular and electable contenders.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Obasanjo dismissed fears that consensus arrangements could override the wishes of party members. According to her, political parties are naturally guided by the need to win elections and would not ignore public sentiment when choosing candidates.

She explained that consensus does not mean imposing unpopular choices, but rather aligning with candidates who already have strong grassroots support. In her view, no serious political party would risk presenting a candidate who could jeopardise its chances at the polls.

Obasanjo stressed that the process ultimately favours individuals who have wide acceptance among party members and voters, noting that parties are unlikely to sideline popular aspirants in favour of weaker ones.

The former Ogun Central lawmaker also expressed confidence that the consensus system would work in her favour as she seeks the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State.

Having recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, she said her experience in public service places her in a strong position in the race. She reiterated her belief in her political strength, maintaining that she remains a formidable contender.

On family support, Obasanjo noted that while she does not need to consult her parents on every political decision, she is confident of their backing, including that of her father, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Nigeria’s Electoral Act recognises consensus and direct primaries as legitimate methods for selecting party candidates, and both approaches are expected to play a key role in shaping party strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the APC has announced plans to adopt the consensus method in choosing its national leadership at its convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.
