Former Super Eagles head coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, has died at the age of 88.

The passing of the respected football tactician was confirmed by his family on Monday through a WhatsApp broadcast message signed by Bolade Adesuyi, a family member.

In the message, the family expressed gratitude to God for the life he lived and described him as a man who made remarkable contributions to Nigerian football and his community.

“With great gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of this great man, a Modakeke High Chief, the first indigenous Nigerian coach of the Super Eagles, father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who passed on to the great beyond a few minutes ago,” the statement read.

Onigbinde was widely respected in Nigerian football circles and served twice as head coach of the Nigeria national football team. He was notable for being one of the earliest indigenous coaches to lead the national team and played a significant role in the development of football in Nigeria.

Beyond his coaching career, he was also a traditional leader in Modakeke and remained an influential figure in sports administration and community affairs.

Further details about his death and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
