The United States government has announced plans to designate the Sudanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, with the decision expected to take effect later this month.

The development was disclosed on Monday in a statement issued by the United States Department of State and signed by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

In the statement titled “Terrorist Designation of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood,” Rubio said the group has already been designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) and will be formally listed as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) from March 16, 2026.

“Today, the Department of State is designating the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and intends to designate the group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, effective March 16, 2026,” Rubio stated.

According to the US government, the group has been involved in violent attacks against civilians during the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The statement alleged that the organisation had used extreme violence to destabilise efforts aimed at resolving the war while promoting its Islamist ideology.

“The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood uses unrestrained violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and advance its violent Islamist ideology. Its fighters, many of whom receive training and support from Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, have reportedly carried out mass executions of civilians,” the statement said.

Rubio also pointed out that the group’s armed wing, the al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade, had previously been sanctioned by the US government in September 2025 under Executive Order 14098 for its role in the war in Sudan.

He further accused the Iranian government of backing extremist activities around the world through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

“As the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, the Iranian regime has financed and directed malign activities globally through its IRGC. The United States will continue to use all available tools to deny the Iranian regime and Muslim Brotherhood branches the resources they need to support terrorism,” Rubio said.

The designation, according to the State Department, is being made under Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, which empower the US government to impose sanctions and other restrictions on organisations linked to terrorism.
