Harry Maguire has opened up on the brief and challenging tenure of Rúben Amorim at Manchester United, admitting that things simply failed to come together during the Portuguese coach’s time at Old Trafford.
In an interview with The Guardian, the England defender was careful not to criticise Amorim, instead praising him as a talented manager with a bright future ahead.
“I have nothing bad to say about him. I believe he’ll go on to have an amazing career and succeed at his next club,” Maguire said.
Despite his support, Maguire acknowledged that Amorim’s stint at United did not deliver the expected results, noting that the players must also share responsibility.
“It just didn’t click or work, and we, as players, have to take a lot of responsibility for that as well,” he added.
Amorim’s time at the club was marked by inconsistency, with United struggling to find form in both the Premier League and domestic competitions. His tactical methods and high expectations reportedly failed to translate into consistent performances on the pitch.
The Portuguese coach was appointed in November 2024 amid high hopes, following his success with Sporting CP. However, adapting to the demands of English football and managing a squad in transition proved more difficult than anticipated.
He eventually parted ways with Manchester United in January 2026, bringing an end to a spell that fell short of expectations.
