Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has strengthened its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading public universities after being ranked among the country’s top 20 institutions in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.
The latest global ranking placed the university 19th among Nigeria’s 312 universities, third among the nation’s 68 state-owned universities, and 137th out of 2,390 universities across Africa.
The development marks another milestone for the institution, reflecting its growing academic reputation, improved research visibility and expanding digital presence.
In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, UNIOSUN described the latest ranking as a testament to its steady progress in teaching, research, innovation and international competitiveness.
According to the statement, the achievement is the result of sustained investments in research, digital scholarship, innovation, quality teaching and strategic international collaborations.
The university noted that its increasing research output, global visibility and partnerships have continued to improve its standing in international rankings.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the ranking as a validation of the institution’s long-term vision of becoming a globally competitive university.
He said emerging as the third-best state university in Nigeria and securing a place among the country’s top 20 universities reflected the impact of deliberate efforts to strengthen academic excellence, research productivity and digital transformation.
“This achievement belongs to every member of the UNIOSUN community. It reflects our shared commitment to excellence, innovation and continuous improvement,” Adebooye said.
“We have remained focused on strengthening our research capacity, enhancing our digital visibility and providing quality education that meets global standards.
“Being ranked 19th among all universities in Nigeria, third among state universities and 137th in Africa is a clear indication that our collective efforts are yielding tangible results on the global stage. These rankings affirm that UNIOSUN is increasingly being recognised as a research-driven and globally competitive university.”
While celebrating the milestone, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that the university remained focused on achieving even greater success.
“Our aspiration is not only to sustain this momentum but also to position UNIOSUN among the leading universities in Nigeria and across Africa,” he added.
Adebooye commended members of staff for their commitment to impactful research, scholarly publications and community service, while also appreciating the contributions of students, alumni and development partners towards enhancing the institution’s global reputation.
He said the latest recognition would motivate the university to further improve research quality, expand international collaborations, promote innovation and sustain academic excellence.
