Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa has confirmed that star forward Kylian Mbappe is set to play a key role in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated encounter at the Santiago Bernabéu, Arbeloa said Mbappe joined the club for defining moments like this, expressing confidence in the Frenchman’s ability to deliver on the big stage.
Mbappe, who is Real Madrid’s leading scorer this season, had been sidelined in recent weeks due to a knee sprain and did not start in their last-16 victory over Manchester City. However, now fully fit, he is expected to spearhead the attack alongside Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior.
“I’m delighted to have players of this quality available,” Arbeloa said.
“Mbappe came here for matches like this, and I’m confident we’ll see him at his very best leading the team.”
The coach acknowledged the challenge of balancing a squad filled with world-class talent but described it as a “good problem” to have. He also hinted at the return of Jude Bellingham, who is regaining fitness after injury.
Youngsters like Thiago Pitarch and Brahim Diaz impressed in the previous round but could see reduced roles as Madrid prepare to field their strongest lineup against the German giants.
Arbeloa praised Mbappe’s unique qualities, noting that his presence significantly changes the team’s attacking dynamics. “Having a player like Mbappe is a blessing. Any coach in the world would want him,” he added, pointing to the threat posed by a forward line that includes Mbappe, Vinicius, and Federico Valverde.
Meanwhile, Vinicius dismissed suggestions of a lack of chemistry with Mbappe, insisting the duo share a strong understanding both on and off the pitch.
“People talk a lot, but he’s here to help us. He gives us confidence and scores goals,” Vinicius said. “We have an incredible connection.”
The Brazilian also admitted Madrid must improve after their recent 2-1 La Liga defeat to Mallorca, which left them trailing league leaders Barcelona.
“We know we have to be at our best,” he said. “In games like this, the top players make the difference, and Mbappe is one of them.”
Vinicius also used the opportunity to speak against racism in football, stressing the need for unity in tackling discrimination across the sport.
Real Madrid will now look to bounce back strongly as they aim to take an advantage into the second leg of the tie against Bayern Munich.
